A song from my pre-Christian days in the 80s popped into my head the other day. A portion of the lyrics goes, “Here I go again on my own. Going down the only road I’ve ever known.” I don’t know what brought that to the forefront of my mind at the time. But it caused me to think and rejoice. Yes, a Heavy Metal Rock song from the 80s caused me to reflect and rejoice in the fact that since June 18, 1989, I no longer had to face anything alone. That was the night that I asked Jesus Christ to forgive me of my sins and to be the Lord of my life.
When God created man, He created man for relationship and for fellowship. The Bible says in Genesis that God saw that man shouldn’t be alone and He created a help mate, woman, to come alongside him so that he would not be alone. God never intended for us to be alone, or to go it alone. Sometimes our pride gets in the way of that. How many times have you found yourself in some sort of trouble that could have been avoided if you had only asked for help?
Moses found himself in need of help. Exodus 17:8-13 records Joshua leading Israel against Amalek and his army. Moses stood above the battle with his hands raised. As long as his hands were raised, Israel would win. But as soon as he lowered his hands, they started to lose. Moses’ brother and brother-in-law came alongside him and gave him a stone to sit on and helped hold his hands in the air. Joshua lead Israel to victory that day and God showed us that we can’t do anything alone. Joshua couldn’t defeat Amalek without Moses, and Moses couldn’t keep his hands raised without Aaron and Hur.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 also gives us some great wisdom regarding going it alone or having a partner. Specifically verse 12 says, “Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” It’s easy to break a piece of thread or a hair. But if you twist a few pieces of thread or hair together, it’s much more difficult to break it. I’ve seen someone descend the face of a building from the roof on a rope made of human hair. When we start to fall isn’t it great to have someone right there to help catch you, hopefully before you break something or hurt yourself?
Jesus also addresses this in the New Testament. In Matthew 18:20 Jesus says, “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Jesus is affirming what God ordained from the beginning and then reiterated through Solomon in Ecclesiastes. We don’t have to face things alone. We shouldn’t face things alone. It is unwise to face things alone. If we let Him, He is right there with us.
The enemy of our souls wants us to believe that we are better off and stronger if we can face the trials and tribulations of this life alone. Satan is trying to divide and conquer, so to speak. He is trying to come between us and God. Unfortunately, too often he succeeds. It is a lie from the pit of Hell when we believe we don’t need any help. It’s the same lie Satan said to Eve in the garden so many years ago and created a separation between God and man, and he’s been working that crack ever since.
My friends, work together, pray together, live in harmony together. A cord of three strands is not easily broken. When one is weak there is another there strong. We must also keep Jesus in the forefront of whatever we say and do. He is with us always until the end of the ages as long as we allow Him to be. Don’t shut Him out. In short, you don’t have to go on your own and be alone. We have brothers and sisters in Christ and Jesus himself to be there with us to help us and guide us. So rejoice! God is with us!
